Individual institutions may contain more than one location which are documented as sites.</div><div><br /></div><div>Data is as of January 1, 2024. For more information visit the U.S. Department of the Interior, <a href='https://www.bia.gov/service/federal-indian-boarding-school-initiative' target='_blank' rel='nofollow ugc noopener noreferrer'>Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative website</a>.</div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Attributes</u></b></div><div><ul><li><b>FIBS or Other Institution - </b>All four criteria must be met for an institution to be considered a FIBS. Any institutions that met some, but not all four of the DOI FIBS criteria, are documented as an Other Institution. This is not definitive confirmation of the FIBS determination, it only represents what has been documented as of this phase of research.</li><li><b>Institution Name</b> - A primary name used to identify the <u>institution</u>. *An asterisk on the name indicates that this is a name that is currently being used for the institution.</li><li><b>Site Name</b> - A unique name used to identify a <u>site</u>. *An asterisk on the name indicates that this is a name that is currently being used for the institution.</li><li><b>City </b>- The nearest city identified that represents where the <u>site</u> is physically located. </li><li><b>State </b>- The state identified that represents where the <u>site</u> is physically located.</li><li><b>Number of Sites and Burial Sites</b> - This number represents how many unique sites were identified at the FIBS institution. Researchers reviewed each FIBS for these items: name, location, and operator. When one out of three items changed, a new site was added to the FIBS, when two out of three items changed a new FIBS institution was created. The total number of burial sites associated with a FIBS is also provided.</li><li><b>Operation Dates</b> - The earliest and latest known dates that a FIBS <u>site</u> was in operation based on this phase of research. These dates may occur before or after the school was active as a FIBS. If a FIBS site was documented as open, then the last known status of the site will be provided. This information may not reflect changes to a site that occurred after research ended.</li></ul><ul><li><b>Other Name(s)</b> - Other names that the <u>institution </u>may have been identified by. *An asterisk on the name indicates that this is a name that is currently being used for the institution.</li><li><b>Associated School(s)</b> - An indicator that the <u>institution</u> was documented with a notable connection or shared history with another FIBS or an Other Institution. The primary name of the associated institution will be provided.</li><li><div><u>DOI FIBS Criteria</u></div><div>1.  <b>Housing </b>– Institution ever described as providing housing or overnight lodging to attendees on site. </div><div>2.  <b>Education </b>- Institution ever described as providing formal academic or vocational training or instruction. </div><div>3.<b>  Federal Support</b> – Institution ever described as having federal government funds or other support provided to the institution. </div><div>4.  <b>Timeframe</b> - Institution operational at any time prior to 1969. </div></li><li><b>Students Identified </b>- This represents the total number of students at an <u>institution</u> this phase of research has identified from historical records. </li><li><b>Deceased Students Identified</b> - If any students of the <u>institution</u> were identified as deceased this number is included.</li><li><b>Type </b>- A designator of the type or category of a FIBS <u>institution</u>. This will document whether a FIBS was another type of institution throughout its history, like an orphanage or a health facility.</li><li><b>Operator </b>- A designator for any entity or group that were documented as being present at a FIBS <u>institution</u>. This may include documentation that financial support, buildings, supplies, superintendents, or teachers were provided by an entity or group.</li><li><b>Tribes Identified</b> - A list of the unique Tribal affiliations of the students identified at a FIBS <u>institution</u>. Where appropriate, the many variations in spelling and naming were summarized and grouped. Note, many historical documents may have used derogatory or inaccurate terminology.
