Specifically, extracted coastlines from the continent feature class and interior country borders from country feature class. Interior country borders were generalized using Simplify Line (2 km tolerance) and Smooth Line (10 km tolerance) tools in ArcGIS Desktop 10.4.1. Generalized interior lines and coastlines were merged and topological errors fixed using Geodatabase Topology (rule: Must not have dangles). Attribute data transferred to new feature class using a spatial join with centroids of the 2015 country borders. Multipart features such as islands were manually joined together to reflect the correct country. - All feature classes and tile layers were projected to Web Mercator before publishing to ArcGIS Online. - Data sources were selected after extensive research into all existing freely-available sources of data.
