            <measDesc>Data exist statewide. However, the source datasets upon which this feature class is built are quite old (1960-1980's vintage).  Minnesota hydrography and the techniques used to capture the data have changed over time. Therefore, many features are missing or poorly represented when compared to current aerial photos. While large lakes are well-represented, many small features and many parts of rivers and streams are missing from polygon representation.  Original features were digitized at (and intended to be viewed at) 100K and 24K scales, depending on the data source. </measDesc>

                <stepDesc>&lt;b&gt;History:  &lt;/b&gt;This dataset contains a collection of the "best available features" representing various scales and accuracies from the combined legacy sources described below.

Open water polygons were originally based on &lt;i&gt;DNR 1:100,000 scale Hydrography&lt;/i&gt; (derived from USGS 100K Digital Line Graph (DLG) data, i.e., the data found on the 1:100,000 USGS topo quad maps).   DNR-managed features were assigned DNR Basin IDs (i.e., DOW numbers) and DNR-specific attributes. Additional polygons were added from the &lt;i&gt;DNR 1:24,000 Hydrography&lt;/i&gt; source layer (originally derived from 1980's NWI) to fill gaps in the 100K data.  

Considerable redigitizing of &lt;u&gt;selected&lt;/u&gt; features has taken place since 2000. Attributes have been enhanced to better support DNR business practices. Most improvements were directed at waterbodies managed by the DNR.

&lt;b&gt;WB_CLASS changes (May 2018) - conversion to 'Drained' status:&lt;/b&gt; The following process was used to identify and reclassify former hydrographic features that have been drained due to ditching or other factors since the time of the original data capture. For more info, contact Steve Kloiber, MNIT at DNR (EWR).

&lt;li&gt;Lake and wetland basins from the DNR Hydrography Open Water basins feature class that were &gt;= 50 acres AND that intersected DNR stream type = (perennial, intermittent, unknown) ditches were selected and flagged as 'potential' drained basins for further review.&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;li&gt;A Lidar-derived, shaded digital elevation model (DEM) was used to determine if the feature was a topographic depression landform as well as to evaluate visible signs of drainage. Any non-depressional features in the selected dataset were flagged for potential conversion to 'Drained' status.&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;li&gt;Recent aerial imagery from various years between 2009 to 2017 was used to determine if the feature was predominantly open water or not. The aerial imagery was used to assign each feature to a temporary drainage class of either partially drained, drained, or undrained.&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;li&gt;The original land survey maps from the General Land Office (GLO) were used to assign a water body type. Features that were meandered or that had a shallow water symbol were classified as lake basins. Features that had marsh symbols or no symbol at all were classified as wetlands.&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;li&gt;Some additional drained lakebed features that were not part of the original query were added if they were encountered during the review process (e.g., West Three, Middle Three, and East Three were all previously classified as “Lake” when they have clearly been drained).&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;li&gt;Of the 1,029 features that were reviewed, 362 were classified as 'Drained' or 'Partially-Drained' Lakebeds.  Most of the rest were classified as 'Drained' or 'Partially-Drained' Wetlands. The distinction between drained wetland and drained lake was primarily based on the symbology of the GLO maps and to a lesser degree the landform as viewed on the shaded DEM. &lt;/li&gt;

&lt;b&gt;WB_CLASS changes (July-August 2018) - re-attribution of mine pit features:&lt;/b&gt; The following process was used to identify polygons that currently represent mine pits that funciton as permanent hydrographic features vs. those that don't.
