The repository is a sampling source, and the information obtained from it is entered into a database that is available for future research. The cores and cuttings contained in the Rock Sample Library (RSL) were generated through exploration into both gas-bearing and non-gas-bearing formations around Pennsylvania and include both donated samples and samples collected by PaGS. This extensive source of information continues to advance governmental, academic, and private-sector research into Pennsylvania’s subsurface geology. To satisfy the requirements for use of this archive, visitors add their discoveries to the RSL holdings, which also contains data provided by the PaGS geologists. Core, cuttings and related information are inventoried under a unique identification code (Boring ID) composed of county of origin’s abbreviation, 3-digit FIPS County Code, and unique identification number, as well as an API number for those samples collected from oil and gas wells. Every sample is identified by the unique Boring ID; all accompanying information is maintained in the database. which contains all the information pertaining to the source location of the core and cuttings and an inventory of the boxes containing that core and cuttings.
