<stepDesc>The fault dataset was generated by performing a detailed study of existing literature, georeferencing source maps, digitizing or downloading selected fault locations, and then generating attributes for traces, such as fault name, fault visibility, age of last known deformation, method of detection (lidar, mapping, or geophysical method), and the source used for the fault trace as well as the corresponding ID number of the fault in the USGS Quaternary fault and fold database. Faults were generated using the largest scale possible, with a 1:250,000 minimum, although a great majority of the source maps were at a scale of 1:100,000 or better. Many fault zones in this dataset contain information from multiple sources. When multiple sources of fault information provided lines representing the same fault trace (not always coincident), consideration was given to the original source map for all publications, as well as potential updates to those maps in subsequent geologic investigations. The source for only the trace of each fault is provided. It is important to note that for many faults, the sources for detailed paleoseismic studies that provide evidence of Quaternary deformation for each fault are not provided. For a more comprehensive list of sources of detailed information about Quaternary faults, refer to the U.S. Geological Survey's Quaternary fault and fold database (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/hazards/qfaults/).
