            <prcStep>
                <stepDesc>A label point was created for each individual soil label using on-screen digitizing, assigned the appropriate soil type attributes, and grouped together by each New Jersey county. It should be noted that these are label points only, and do not represent either soil polygon centroids, nor are the points associated with any polygonal linework.

Each soil label consists of two parts. The first is a label indicating the soil type as a function of its geological composition and its soil texture, and the second is an estimate of the ground water-table conditions. Additionally, some labels use either a diagonal bar or a fractional symbol to indicate either intermingling at the surface or subsurface variation.

The use of a diagonal bar or fractional symbol does not determine a unique soil type, so the attributes of the soil label points were attributed as shown in Entity and Attribute Information.

Each county was surveyed and mapped separately, so all label points were grouped by county into an ESRI personal geodatabase in Microsoft Access format. Each geodatabase consisted of two parts:

SOIL_LABELS: this is a point feature class that contains all the label points for the county, with attributes as described previously.

SOIL_LABELS_PDF_PGNUM: this is a table that is used to link the soil label attribute to the corresponding page number in the PDF soil survey booklet.

To help reduce label errors, each county geodatabase also contains three domain names with coded values for label_type, soil_label, and drainage. The coded values in the domain names were used to provide a unique set of values for each county that can be used a pull-down list when the label points were being assigned attributes.
