U.S. Census Populated Place Areas provides the boundaries and 2020 U.S. Census class, codes, and population information for the Census populated places of the United States. Populated Place Areas are polygons containing population totals from the 2020 Census.

In compliance with FGDC metadata standards, Esri has attempted to practice proper metadata methodologies by providing any data source information, descriptions, and file names to assist in this effort.

The following steps were performed by Esri: Downloaded Census TIGER/Line Geodatabases 2020 from the U.S. Census Bureau and extracted the Census Designated Place and Incorporated Place datasets. Clipped to the shoreline using Census TIGER/Line Hydrography Geodatabases 2020 and NOAA National Shoreline datasets. Projected the dataset to World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS84). Added the field STATE_ABBR from Census TIGER/Line Geodatabases 2020. Added the fields NAME and CLASS and created their values from parsing the values of the name and description source field. Added the fields STATE_FIPS and PLACE_FIPS and created their values from parsing the values of the FIPS source field. Added the field POPULATION (alias POPULATION_2020) from Esri and U.S. Census Bureau: 2020 (Public Law 94-171). Added the field POP_CLASS (based on POPULATION) and calculated it with range breaks. Added the field SQMI and calculated its values projected to North America Albers Equal Area Conic. Added and calculated the field POP_SQMI (alias POP20_SQMI). Reordered and removed fields.

The dataset is converted to file geodatabase (FGDB) format using tools in ArcGIS. The geometry is checked, and if needed repaired.
After processing, the dataset is checked for drawing display and number of records and file sizes compared with source materials.
The spatial accuracy varies with the source materials used. The Census Bureau cannot specify the spatial accuracy of features changed or added by field staff or through local updates, features derived from the GBF/DIME Files (TIGER’s predecessor in 1970 and 1980), or other map or digital sources. The positional accuracy is unknown.
