The first digit of a five-digit ZIP Code divides the United States into 10 large groups of states numbered from 0 in the Northeast to 9 in the far West. Within these areas, each state is divided into an average of 10 smaller geographical areas, identified by the second and third digits. These digits, in conjunction with the first digit, represent a sectional center facility or a mail processing facility area. The fourth and fifth digits identify a post office, station, branch or local delivery area. It provides ZIP Code, postal district name, population, and area for the ZIP Code areas in the United States.</div><p>The ZIP Code boundaries are from March 2016 source. The fields include estimated total population for 2015.</p></div>

The following steps were performed by Esri: Extracted the dataset from StreetMap Premium for ArcGIS North America TomTom. Removed all Canada and Mexico records. Added the field STATE and coded it by overlaying on Data and Maps 2015 U.S. States. Added the field POPULATION (alias POP2015). Added the field SQMI and calculated its values. Added and calculated the field POP_SQMI (alias POP15_SQMI). Put "-99" values into all number type fields (except SQMI) for records where there were no data.

The dataset is converted to file geodatabase (FGDB) format using tools in ArcGIS. The geometry is checked, and if needed repaired.
After processing, the data set is checked for drawing display and number of records and file sizes compared with source materials.
Horizontal positional accuracy is dependent on geographic area. In most areas, accuracy is between 5 and 25 meters (16 and 82 feet). In some areas, accuracy is off by up to several tens of meters (100 feet or more). In the poorest areas, accuracy is off by up to 100 meters (328 feet).
