The area also hosts multiple fisheries species of conservation concern and important migratory bird stopover habitat. It supports 4 NWRs and TNC’s Virginia Coast Reserve, has been designated a United Nations Biosphere Reserve (<a href='http://www.unesco.org/mabdb/br/brdir/directory/biores.asp?mode=all&amp;code=USA+31'>http://www.unesco.org/mabdb/br/brdir/directory/biores.asp?mode=all&amp;code=USA+31</a>), and is included in the North American Coastal Plain global biodiversity hotspot (<a href='http://www.cepf.net/news/top_stories/Pages/Announcing-the-Worlds-36th-Biodiversity-Hotspot.aspx'>http://www.cepf.net/news/top_stories/Pages/Announcing-the-Worlds-36th-Biodiversity-Hotspot.aspx</a>).
