Using B.C. Stats population estimates as a basis, and the Labour Force Survey from Statistics Canada, the workforce size is estimated for the Squamish Census Subdivision (CSD). The local workforce is derived from EMSI analyst data, provider of labour market data. Relative to the population growth, this same period, Squamish's workforce grew at an even faster pace, rising 26.5% to 15,725. This translates to 548 workers added each year to Squamish's workforce over the 2017 to 2022 period.</p><p style='box-sizing:border-box; margin-top:0px; margin-bottom:12px;'>While the workforce rapidly expanded during the 2017 to 2022 timeframe, local Squamish-based jobs grew by an estimated 4%. This slower growth is attributed to the Covid-19 pandemic and followed a period of significant local job growth. Between 2016 and 2019 alone, the number of local jobs grew 26%, or 9% annually, to reach an all-time high of 11,988 jobs in 2019. This significant rise in jobs was offset by an 8% contraction in 2020 and 2021, when local jobs fell to 10,033 before rebounding 3.8% in 2022 to reach 11,448, and still below 2019.</p><p style='box-sizing:border-box; margin-top:0px; margin-bottom:12px;'>While the number of local jobs does not necessarily reflect the number of Squamish workforce locally employed, as some Squamish-based jobs may be filled by non-residents, it provides an indicator of job opportunities relative to the total size of the workforce. Based on the number of local jobs available, in 2022, Squamish’s local jobs to local workforce ratio is .73 jobs for every worker. This compares to a high of 0.9 jobs for every worker in 2018.</p><p style='box-sizing:border-box; margin-top:0px; margin-bottom:12px;'>Noted for context purposes, is that based on the 2021 Statistics Canada Census release, 21% or 2,830 of Squamish’s employed workforce, worked outside of the Squamish Subdivision at a usual place of work in 2021, while 36% worked at a usual place of work within Squamish, 27% worked from home, and 17% indicated no fixed address (I.e., contractors, trades workers). This compares to 46% working at a usual place of work in Squamish, 25% working outside of the Squamish Subdivision, 12% working from home and 17% citing no fixed address in 2016.
