This data was historically based on fares, however beginning in August 2019, BC Transit began tracking ridership based on </span><em>people counters </em><span style='color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family:"Myriad Pro", "Avenir Next"; font-size:16px;'>(on-board technology). Prior to the pandemic, increasing ridership was recorded 2018/19 with increasing levels of service, infrastructure improvements, communications improvements and population growth. Ridership estimates for 2016/17 and 2017/18 do not include the 5-12 age group, and all years do not include the 4 and under age group. In 2017, Squamish introduced free transit for children aged 12 and under, and these riders were not included in the 2017/18 annual ridership number, making ridership that year appear lower than it was in reality. As transit service increases, transit becomes a more attractive alternative to the single occupant vehicle. Efforts to increase transit ridership ensure that Squamish neighbourhoods are connected by an efficient, accessible and reliable local transit system that will in turn connect to enhanced future regional transit services. Official Community Plan policies encourage density along the District's Core Transit Network, paired with transit service and infrastructure improvements to meet community service and mobility needs. The District is also a partner in the completed Sea to Sky Transit Future Plan (2015) that will guide transit in the region over the next 25 years.</p></div></div></div></div></div>
