First, spatial data were gathered and/or generated for metrics (e.g., percent tree canopy cover, impervious surfaces, topographic wetness index [TWI]) that may correlate with or compound health or environmental outcomes associated with flooding. Secondly, a neutral grid of evenly sized squares was created in ArcGIS and overlaid on the study area; the presence of each metric was measured within each cell (percent area or mean value). Next, to normalize the data values, the summed values were classified into five equal quantiles, with values of 1 to 5, each containing about 20% of the total counts. The quantiles were summed and then classified into new quantiles, which were displayed in grids using a color gradient from light (quantile 1) to dark (quantile 5). If the metric is conversely proportional to the outcome–-for example, greater amounts of greenspace are inversely related to the impacts of flooding events, then the quantile values were reversed.
