<idAbs>The object of this analysis was to quantify the impact of Mountain Top Removal (MTR) mining practices in Group 6s’s study area.  To begin this process we had to compile the individual Landsat images in order to have a unified image within the study area to perform an unsupervised classification.  After 50 unclassified classes were produced, we manually renamed each class as either being in an MTR area or not.  Reclassification of the image then produced a raster with two distinct classes.
In order to acquire an area calculation, we needed to convert the raster to a polygon so acreage could be computed.  After the polygon was produced, select areas were removed from the layer.  These areas included buffers around roads and streams (which have similar spectral characteristics to MTR zones) and areas outside of mountain ridges zones (blasting only occurs on the mountain ridges so this is a search requirement).
The analysis showed that there was 12,254 acres of MTR area in this Group 6 subset.  Accuracy was assessed at 86.7 percent by generating random points and validating their accuracy by visual comparison to the Landsat imagery.  The 2010 MTR acreage impacted was an increase of over 7,300 acres from the 2005 MTR area.
