This map highlights regions of the Appalachian Mountains that were used to extract coal by the technique of mountain top removal.
Mountain Top Removal is an effective technique used by the Mining industry to extract coal from the coal enriched mountains of the Appalachians. Even though this is a productive technique, it has dramatic effects on the surrounding environments. MTR destroys habitats, pollutes the air, and destroys near by water systems. The amount of damage constructed from MTRs can take hundreds of thousands of year to replenish itself.</idAbs>
