<idAbs>The two features displayed in this map are used to enhance the area of where the Mountain Top Removal(MTR) has occurred. The stream layer was added to give a hydrological view to compare with the removal to show how the streams interact with the disturbed area.  Several steps and tools were used to create the mountain top removal layer.  I first started out with a Landsat image file taken in 2010 that was of a specific path and row, other members in my group were given a different paths and rows, and the image you see in grey is the final image with all sections merged together.  The Image was first unzipped and all seven layers were combined using the composite bands tool, then the extract by mask tool was used to clip the image to my assigned area.  ERDAS Imagine was used to perform an unsupervised classification and then the image was opened in ArcGIS to reclassify the MTR area, all other areas were not assigned a value.  After this was accomplished the raster was then converted to a polygon so that further analysis could be do with other vector layers.  A ridges layer was added and select by location to associate the area with the ridges and create a new polygon feature where they intersected.  This avoided using area not associated with MTR. was used The Erase tool was used to remove stream, river and road features, that could be confused for MTR area.  Next the features were broken in to multi features from single features so that we could isolate areas of less than 40 acres and remove them as well.  Finally 30 random points were added to the map and I check them to determine the percentage of the MTR that I thought was correctly classified.  Finally all group members areas were combined to show the entire section.&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;When pondering what actually takes place to get this coal, it seems shameful to look back at the mess we created.  I know that coal is an important energy source and that we have to weigh the cost of using alternate energy sources, and it also created jobs that generate revenue for some of the poorest income areas in the country.  Most of the people that mine coal, are from several generations of coal miners, so it is in their blood and it might be the only way for them to make a living.  Continuing to mine coal may be required, but there should be a better way to do it.  If you must do mountain top removal, the you have to use all the trees and the top soil and rocks for other industries.  They can't be used to fill up valleys and block sources of water, and create pollution.  In addition to that, and probably most costly, we cannot allow for the toxic slurry to be created and then put in some large vat, and then hope that it never seeps into the water table.  Companies must not take short cuts and destroy the Earth we live on to make energy.  I read an article the other day that said that the country is switching to more natural gas energy companies rather than coal.  I believe this is a step in the right direction to use a less invasive tactic to find ways to create energy.  I am sure that natural gas has some side effects, but it much cleaner to produce.  A pump station is created miles away and the boring is done to tap the gas pocket.  The gas is then mined out and compressed or piped to a distribution center.  Many of the people that live within this area are paid royalties for the gas under their property, that way they receive something for the minerals taken from below their land.  There are plusses and minuses to every type of energy source, but I believe companies must be responsible and preserve the land that they strip for future generations.  &lt;/div&gt;</idAbs>
