<idAbs>     This dataset was completed by students of the University of West Florida's Special Topics in GIS course as part of an ongoing project of Skytruth. The members of group 2 used ERDAS Imagine to conduct an unsupervised image classification to identify areas of Mountain Top Removal (MTR) in our project area. We created 50 different classes, and identified each class as MTR or non-MTR areas (and re-colored and labeled each area accordingly). After all classes had beed identified and edited, we reclassified the raster and converted the data to a polygon shapefile. Next, we calculated our data's accuracy by using the create random points tool to create 30 random points within our project area. We then went through and noted whether each spot was correctly identified (the point was in a labeled MTR area and the aerial imagery actually showed MTR activity, or if the point was not in an MTR area in our data and the aerial imagery). The final step for each group member was to create a layer package to be sent to the group leader with our MTR layer complete with accuracy, total MTR acres in the area, and change from the 2005 data to the 2010 data.
     I was the group leader, so I reviewed each data set to make sure that they each met the required parameters to be considered MTR areas as set by Skytruth. I also checked the accuracy of each group and decided which datasets to use and which to exclude. After reviewing the listed accuracy for each layer and comparing the MTR area polygons to the aerial imagery, I decided to include all layers because each added some necessary points to the map. Many of the main MTR areas visible in the aerial imagery were contained by one or more of the MTR polygons. We did miss a few MTR areas, but overall I feel that we did well considering our limited knowledge of aerial photography interpretation. It was also my first time completing analysis with Erdas Imagine. Overall, I feel that we overcame some large challenges to create a polished final project.</idAbs>
