Description: En lo que atañe a los hábitats, a pesar del tamaño insular modesto y su carácter occidental y relativamente húmedo, La Palma alberga 17 de los 25 Hábitats de Interés Comunitario presentes en el archipiélago canario, entre los que se encuentran algunos de los más raros o escasos, como los acantilados costeros con vegetación endémica macaronésica (código 1250), los manantiales petrificantes con formación de tuf (código 7220), las pendientes rocosas silíceas con vegetación casmofítica (código 8220), las cuevas volcánicas no explotadas o aprovechadas por el turismo (código 8310), las cuevas marinas (código 8330), los bosques de ribera en galería (código 92A0), las galerías y matorrales ribereños termomediterráneos (código 92D0) y los palmerales de Phoenix canariensis (código 9370). Sin embargo, La Palma sobresale por la importante y relativamente bien conservada extensión de monteverde y laurisilva (código 9363), en el piso montano húmedo, sobre todo en la vertiente Norte y Este insular y en fondos de barrancos con otras exposiciones. También son destacables las extensiones de pinares canarios de Pinus canariensis (código 9550), que ocupan buena parte del piso montano seco, ocupando buena parte de la vertiente occidental de la Isla, así como los bosquetes con Juniperus endémicos (código 9565). Sin embargo diversos expertos consideran que podían haber existido bosques de cedro canario (Juniperus cedrus) que el pastoreo intensivo y las talas abusivas destruyeron.
