Description: Overview
This feature layer represents the authoritative statewide soil units derived from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Gridded Soil Survery Geopgraphic database (gSSURGO). The polygons in this dataset delineate the boundaries of soil units for use in assisting sustainable forestry, wildlife habitat, soil and water conservation, and public recreation.
This dataset is intended for use in planning, management, analysis, and public information purposes. It serves as the primary TDF GIS data source for Tennessee soils.
Data Attributes
- AREASYMBOL: The state area symbol of the mapunit.
- SPATIALVER: The spatial version of the mapunit.
- MUSYM: The abbreviated symbol of the soil mapunit.
- MUKEY: The mapunit key field is found throughout SSURGO and provides a primary link between the geographic and tabular data.
- MUNAME: The full mapunit name.
- FARM: The farmland classification of the mapunit.
- ACRES: Acreage of the mapunit.
- HYDRICRATING: The hydric rating of the mapunit.
- LCPRIMARY: The primary land cover classification of the mapunit.
- LCSECONDARY: The secondary land cover classification of the mapunit.
- DRAINAGECLASS: The drainage class of the mapunit.
- HYDROGROUP: The soil hydrologic group code of the mapunit.
- FROSTFREEDAYS: Number of frost free days in a calendar year, on average, of the mapunit.
- SOILORDER: The taxonomic soil order of the mapunit.
Data Maintenance
This layer is actively maintained by the TDF Forest Data and Analysis Unit. It is updated periodically to reflect new data publishes from the gSSURGO dataset.
