            <abstract>Stream network density exerts a strong control on hydrologic processes in watersheds, yet existing stream maps in the mid-Atlantic region fail to capture stream network density with sufficient accuracy for most applications. Hydrography data for this data set were produced through a model workflow that predicts stream presence and absence from field observations of headwater stream channels and maximum entropy models (MaxEnt), commonly implemented in biogeographical studies to model species distributions. Training data originated with 256 field observations of channel heads (most up-slope evidence of concentrated water flow and sediment transport between definable banks) spanning the entire physiographic range of the study region. These data were expanded by assuming stream presence at all locations down flow direction from the observed channel heads. Streams were constrained to be a single pixel wide (10-m) and to flow along flowlines in the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD). The final training data set consisted of 10,520 stream segments, each 10-m long. Landscape variables (slope, soil silt-clay fraction, plan and profile curvature and flow accumulation area) were calculated for each 10-m pixel, continuously accumulated along hydrologic flowpaths, and used as dependent variables in the MaxEnt stream distribution model. In validation, the model correctly predicts the presence of 91% of all 10-m stream segments and increases stream length over the NHD in most areas. The accuracy of any one prediction of stream presence increases with flow accumulation area, with most of the errors accumulating in streams with a catchment area smaller than 15 ha. The resulting data cover the entire Potomac River Basin (37,800 km2) and several large basins adjacent to the Potomac Basin that were included to cover all of Maryland west of the Chesapeake Bay.</abstract>
            <purpose>These data are expected to augment and in some cases replace current maps of streams provided by the high-resolution (1:24,000) National Hydrography Dataset (NHD). For synoptic evaluations of stream density and stream length, these data are superior to the NHD in two main respects. (1) Streams with a catchment area smaller than 10,000 ha are not always included in the NHD. The new data are expected to be most useful when studying streams with a catchment area in the range of 100 to 10,000 ha. (2) In highly urbanized areas, many streams were buried beneath development prior to the production of the first US stream maps. Because we used digital elevation models to predict the location of streams, buried streams appear in the new stream maps despite no current surface expression. Despite these improvements, care should be taken when attempting to understand stream density or stream presence and absence in small study areas. The location of small streams is difficult to predict and field validation should be used in cases where model error could lead to significant errors in subsequent analyses.</purpose>
