Abstract:  The angling zone features dataset provides a spatial representation of the geographic extent of 2013 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulation locations that relate to entire angling zones. These zone locations are described within the zone regulations of the regulation booklet. Zones are mutually exclusive with the exception of coastal bays where marine zone regulations also apply.

Purpose: The purpose of this dataset is to enable anglers to determine where specific (zone related) angling regulations apply. The angling regulation features as represented by this dataset will be available to anglers via either a web or mobile mapping application. While this dataset does not contain a description of the specific regulations associated with each feature, it can serve as a template for associating regulation descriptions.

Constraints:
Limitations of use: The regulations often change on a daily, seasonal or annual basis in space and time. It is critically important to incorporate changes on a real time basis because the regulations are used as an enforcement tool by the Oregon State Police. Due to the dynamic nature of these data, information provided by ODFW is only valid for the date that it is provided. Please also note that provision of these data does not provide ODFW endorsement, support, or sponsorship of any product except the official Oregon Sport Fishing Map Application. No warranty expressed or implied is made regarding the accuracy or utility of the data on any other system or for general or scientific purposes, nor shall the act of distribution constitute any such warranty. This disclaimer applies both to individual use of the data and aggregate use with other data. It is also strongly recommended that careful attention be paid to the contents of the metadata file associated with these data. Neither the Data Steward nor the data originators shall be held liable for improper or incorrect use of the data described and/or contained herein. Lineage:
Lineage statement: Angling zone boundaries generally follow the boundaries of other existing datasets (e.g. watersheds, counties) and thus those datasets were used to create and refine this dataset. Some on-screen digitizing using topo or imagery reference layers was necessary in small areas (e.g. river mouths) to accurately represent the areas that are described within the angling regulation booklet. While this dataset initially was developed for the purpose of supporting small scale maps, it has been refined to represent zone boundaries at a 24,000 scale.

Process step:
When the process occurred:  2013-02-28T00:00:00
Description: Polygon features for the Columbia, Snake and Marine zones were added to the dataset in January 2013. The marine zone utilized the existing shoreline and was mapped out to the 50 mile fisheries conservation zone boundary by buffering the NOAA 24 nautical mile line (U.S. Maritime Limits and Boundaries dataset). The Columbia zone utilized the Oregon Framework Waterbody polygon feature for the double-lined stream as a starting point. It was then modified along the southern boundary to align with the railroad line (Oregon Geospatial Enterprise Office 2009). Adjustments were made at larger river mouths to reflect the angling booklet description of the zone boundary ending at the river mouths. At Youngs Bay the boundary was changed from the railroad line to the Hwy 101 bridge per ODFW staff review. The Snake River zone utilized the Oregon Framework Waterbody polygon feature for the double-lined stream as a starting point. Adjustments were made to match the angling regulation booklet description and boundaries were reviewed by district staff. Adjustments were made to zone boundaries to align with the 2012 watershed boundary dataset.
Rationale: To make the zone dataset complete and accurate to a 24,000 scale.

Description: The initial version of the angling zone GIS dataset was created in 2007. Only 6 of the 9 zones were delineated at that time. Zone boundaries were not delineated for the Columbia, Snake or Marine zones at that time. Where zone boundaries align with watershed boundaries, the Natural Resource Conservation Service / USGS 4th field hydrologic unit dataset (circa 2007) was used for feature boundaries. Where zone boundaries align with either state or county boundaries, data from the Oregon Geospatial Data Clearinghouse were used as reference.
Rationale: The purpose of the first version of this dataset was to support very small scale maps within the sport fishing regulation booklet.
