The land inventory is based on several sources. The polygon geography is taken from appraisal district parcel layers merged together. A land use inventory is performed by classifying land according to a coding system that reflects the primary improvements (buildings or structures) on each parcel. Most of the land use information is attached through a GIS Union from past land use inventories. Undeveloped parcels are checked against building permit, aerial photos, and appraisal records, generally collected during the fall, or when data was made available. Information is collected only in the City of Austin’s Full, Limited Purpose, and Extra-territorial jurisdictions, and not entire counties.
The Comprehensive Transportation Network (CTN) compiles information from multiple sources and acts as the official source for roadway classifications and their defining characteristics in the full purpose city limits. The network also acts as a reference to other information, such as planned projects, transit routes, traffic volumes, accident volumes, projects in the city’s ETJ. The CTN is inclusive of all roadway classifications while keeping the geometry simple. It includes defining characteristics of the traveled way and streetside spaces.
The CTN can be used to provide a basis to map traffic volumes, perform Linear Referencing, plan and track progress for Complete Streets, identify Critical Arterials, and provide information to CAMPO for modeling.
The CTN was created by City of Austin Transportation Department Staff between 2017 and 2018 using ArcGIS software to compile information from multiple sources, including the Bicycle Master Plan, Urban Trails Master Plan, Sidewalks Master Plan, CodeNEXT, ASMP, and CapMetro's Connections 2025. The CTN is updated regularly, as update to the City's transportation infrastructure occurs.
The Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority (CMTA) Stops feature layer contains data provided by CMTA through MetroLabs. Refer to the Source Date field in the attribute table for the last update date.
