Service Description: Data layer for the Waikato Regional Coastal Plan containing Mataitai and Taiapure Reserve data layers, downloaded from the DOC portal but originally sourced by MPI.
This Taiāpure data layer is a representation of fishing closures containing all statuses from proposed to gazetted. A spatial closure to set aside coastal fishing areas which customarily have been of special significance to an iwi or hapu as a source of food (kaimoana) or for spiritual or cultural reasons.
This layer is only a geographic representation of Mataitai and contains the polygon boundaries for all states and statuses of a given Mataitai. This layer contains polygons for the proposed, gazetted and declined Mataitai boundaries in New Zealand. Mataitai reserves are areas closed to commercial fisheries. A spatial closure for the purposes of helping recognise use and management practices of Mäori in the exercise of non-commercial fishing rights. For more information on managing customary fisheries see: https://www.fisheries.govt.nz/law-and-policy/maori-customary-fishing/managing-customary-fisheries
