Description: Basic Description: The point feature class "PBMP_ELP_City_Point_001" represents in 842 locations in Pompeii of surveyed elevation points in meters above sea level. Data history: Features in this layer are based on multiple sources. The locations and elevation values come from mainly from the RICA Maps of the Corpus Topographicum Pompeianum, vol. III. These are supplemented by locations and values from Eschebach and Müller-Trollius 1993, the Pompeii Archaeological Research Project: Porta Stabia (PARP:PS, http://classics.uc.edu/pompeii/), and Etani et al. (1998, 150, 2003, fig. 6; 129-33, figs. 6-11). Elevation points from PARP:PS and Etani et al. provide greater detail city blocks VIII.7 and the Porta Stabia, and to the area of Tower 9, respectively. The elevation points from Eschebach are those that are not superseded by the greater precision of the RICA maps. These remaining Eschebach elevation point were rounded to the nearest decimeter, while those of the RICA maps are accurate to the nearest 5 centimeters. The locations of all elevation points were placed within a CAD file provided by the Soprintendenza di Pompei to Eric Poehler in 2003. The CAD file was created by digitizing the RICA Maps of Pompeii, 1984, supported by World Monuments Watch and funded by American Express. The RICA MAPs were drawn in part from aerial images taken at 820m and supplemented by on the ground survey. Inconsistencies among the features of this layer with satellite imagery or other maps of Pompeii may be the result of errors in the rectification of the original aerial images. On the creation of the RICA Maps, see Van der Poel, H. B., Corpus Topographicum Pompeianum, vol. IIIA. Austin, TX, 1986, XI-XIX. Symbologies: This feature class is symbologized as a blue (Cretan blue) circle with cross (circle 16) at 8 pt size, with no display transparency, and scale visibility set to not above 1:10,000.
