View In:   Map Viewer

Name: Confidence - Fountains Period (c. 20-1 BCE)

Display Field: Name

Type: Feature Layer

Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolygon

Description: Basic Description: The polygon feature class Confidence - Fountains Period (c. 20-1 BCE) (filename- PBMP_DIR_City_Poly_001) represents the certainty values associated with each street at Pompeii for the period between c. 20 and 1 BCE as published in table 6.7 of Poehler, Eric E. 2017. The Traffic Systems of Pompeii (New York: Oxford University Press). This map does not appear in that book. Data History: The attribute data for these features were derived from figure 6.13 and table 6.7 of Poehler, E. The Traffic Systems of Pompeii (New York: Oxford University Press) and were produced by in-field observation and documentation by the author between 1998 and 2016. Definitions of certainty type values (0 though 5) are as follows: “0: No directions present; 1: Direction present, cannot fit pattern. Excluded; 2: Multiple directions present, no relations to pattern; 3: 3a. Multiple directions present, sorted by relation to pattern, 3b. Only one direction, fits pattern, 3c. Multiple directions, alternating street; 4: 4a. Older direction blocked by object, new on opposite corner; 4b. Older direction associated with deep ruts, new with fainter; 5: 5a. New direction cuts older on same stone, 5b. New direction on a stone that blocks older.” (p. 187, caption for figure 6.13). After joining the information on certainty types to the Streets (STR) layer, the streets were given a three meter buffer to improve visibility of the attribute data. Spatial data in this layer are based on a CAD file provided by the Soprintendenza di Pompei to Eric Poehler in 2003. The CAD file was created by digitizing the RICA Maps of Pompeii, 1984, supported by World Monuments Watch and funded by American Express. The RICA MAPs were drawn in part from aerial images taken at 820m and supplemented by on the ground survey. Inconsistencies among the features of this layer with satellite imagery or other maps of Pompeii may be the result of errors in the rectification of the original aerial images and differences projected between coordinate systems (PBMP data are in the Monte_Mario_Italy_2 projected coordinate system). On the creation of the RICA Maps, see Van der Poel, H. B., Corpus Topographicum Pompeianum, vol. IIIA. Austin, TX, 1986, XI-XIX. Symbologies: This feature class is symbolized on a color ramp (Errors) from beige (0) to orange (3) to red (5). There is no display transparency and scale visibility set to not above 1:40,000. Credits: These data were produced by Eric Poehler for the Pompeii Bibliography and Mapping Project after original CAD data provided by the Soprintendenza di Pompei.
