Description: Basic Description: The polygon feature class "Topographic Features" represents the all the basic features of Pompeian topography (except streets and buildings), 111 complete or partial City Blocks (insulae) in the excavated area; 20 components of the seven city Gates; 35 public Fountains; the Forum, 26 segments of the Fortifications, including 11 defensive towers; 46 Projected City Blocks (insulae) in the unexcavated areas, 9 areas that remain Unexcavated; and, 14 Water Towers.
Data History: Features in this layer are based on a CAD file provided by the Soprintendenza di Pompei to Eric Poehler in 2003. The CAD file was created by digitizing the RICA Maps of Pompeii, 1984, supported by World Monuments Watch and funded by American Express. The RICA MAPs were drawn in part from aerial images taken at 820m and supplemented by on the ground survey. Inconsistencies among the features of this layer with satellite imagery or other maps of Pompeii may be the result of errors in the rectification of the original aerial images and differences projected between coordinate systems (PBMP data are in the Monte_Mario_Italy_2 projected coordinate system). On the creation of the RICA Maps, see Van der Poel, H. B., Corpus Topographicum Pompeianum, vol. IIIA. Austin, TX, 1986, XI-XIX.
Topologies: Individual features of this feature class are arranged so that their order produces best the visibility and relationships of all. That order, from uppermost to lowermost, is as follows: Fortifications, Gates, Fountains, Water Towers, City Blocks, Forum, Unexcavated Areas, Projected City Blocks.
Symbologies: This feature class is supported by a Layer file of the same name that contains its symbologies (multiple), display transparency (40%), and scale visibilities (none).
Credits: This data was produced by Eric Poehler for the Pompeii Bibliography and Mapping Project after original CAD data provided by the Soprintendenza di Pompei.
