Description: This point datalayer shows the locations of schools in Massachusetts. Schools appearing in this layer are those attended by students in pre-kindergarten through high school. Categories of schools include public, private, charter, collaborative programs, and approved special education. This dataset originally was developed by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) GIS Program based on database information provided by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DOE). MassGIS now maintains and makes periodic updates to this dataset. The update published in October 2012 was based on listings MassGIS obtained from the DOE as of February 17, 2012, plus a change received from the field. An additional update was made in September 2013, to the Mount Pleasant Preschool in Plymouth. The layer is stored in ArcSDE and distributed as SCHOOLS_PT.

Description: This layer represents all the public and many of the private roadways in Massachusetts, including designations for Interstate, U.S. and State routes.Formerly known as the Massachusetts Highway Department (MHD) Roads, then the Executive Office of Transportation - Office of Transportation Planning (EOT-OTP) Roads, the MassGIS-MassDOT Roads layer includes linework from the 1:5,000 road and rail centerlines data that were interpreted as part of the 1990's Aerial Imagery project. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation - Office of Transportation Planning, which maintains the primary source for this layer, continues to add linework from municipal and other sources and update existing linework using the most recent aerial ortho imagery as a base. The attribute table includes many "road inventory" fields maintained in MassDOT's linear referencing system. See the Attributes section below for more details. The current MassGIS-MassDOT hybrid data layer was first published in November 2018, based on the MassDOT 2017 year-end Road Inventory layer and results of a 2014-2015 MassDOT-Central Transportation Planning Staff project to conflate street names and other attributes from MassGIS' "base streets" to the MassDOT Road Inventory linework. The base streets are continually maintained by MassGIS as part of the NextGen 911 and Master Address Database (MAD) projects. MassGIS staff reviewed the conflated layer and added many base street arcs digitized after the completion of the conflation work. MassGIS added several fields to support legacy symbology and labeling. Other edits included modifying some linework in areas of recent construction and roadway reconfiguration to align to 2017-2018 Google ortho imagery, and making minor fixes to attributes and linework. MassGIS continues to modify the layer as needed. In ArcSDE this layer is named EOTROADS_ARC.From this data layer MassGIS extracted the Major Roads and Major Highway Routes layers.

Description: The following tables from the US Census Bureau were used to compile the updated 2020 EJ datalayer, released in November, 2022:Minority population:2020 Census Redistricting Data: Table P2: HISPANIC OR LATINO, AND NOT HISPANIC OR LATINO BY RACEpct_minority_P2 = ((Total pop P2_001N - Not Hispanic or Latino:Population of one race:White alone P2_005N) / Total P2_001N) * 100Median Household Income (block groups, municipalities and state)American Community Survey 2020 5-year estimates: Table B19013: MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME IN THE PAST 12 MONTHS (IN 2020 INFLATION-ADJUSTED DOLLARS)Limited English Households:American Community Survey 2020 5-year estimates: Table C16002: HOUSEHOLD LANGUAGE BY HOUSEHOLD LIMITED ENGLISH SPEAKING STATUSlimEngHH = Total:Spanish:limited English speaking household C16002_004E + Total:Other Indo-European languages:limited English speaking household C16002_007E + Total:Asian and Pacific Island languages:Limited English speaking household C16002_010E + Total:Other languages:Limited English speaking household C16002_013E) limEngHHpct = (limEngHH / TotalHH C16002_001E) * 100Additional data adjustments:1. Block groups with a total population of fewer than 50 were removed.2. 228 2020 block groups have no MHHI in 2020 ACS table.130 of these did have a value in the 2019 ACS table so the 2019 BG MHHI and PCT BG MHHI (so the 2019 value for MA MHHI is used) were transferred to 130 BGs in the 2020 update. Those BGs are coded with ‘1’ in BG_MHHI_is_2019 This leaves 96 block groups with an unknown and not substituted 2020 BG MHHI 5 of these are in towns with a muni MHHI > 150% of the MA MHHI. These are not designated as EJ. 43 of the remaining are designated as EJ with the M and/or E criteria 16 of the remaining have a population in EJ group quarters > 50% 16 of the remaining have a total population < 50 This leaves 16 block groups that may be EJ for income but no data are available to determine this. These are coded as EJ = No and median_household_income = ‘U’.
Description: This dataset contains representations of Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) bus stops for the Spring 2017 schedule. The layer was developed by the Central Transportation Planning Staff (CTPS) of the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). The primary input sources were the General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) shapes, stops and stop-times files produced by the MBTA for each quarterly schedule. The shapes file provides a sequence of point coordinates for each route. The stops file provides the coordinates for each transit stop and station. A sequential list of stops for each for each route was extracted from the stop-times file, which provides scheduled departure times by stop for each trip. The stop lists by route were edited to match those obtained from the MBTA's schedule database. Point feature classes were generated from the shape and stop coordinate files, and their features snapped to Massachusetts Department of Transportation 2011 roadway inventory features. Stop points underwent further edits to improve locational accuracy.

Description: The protected and recreational open space datalayer contains the boundaries of conservation lands and outdoor recreational facilities in Massachusetts. The associated database contains relevant information about each parcel, including ownership, level of protection, public accessibility, assessor’s map and lot numbers, and related legal interests held on the land, including conservation restrictions. Conservation and outdoor recreational facilities owned by federal, state, county, municipal, and nonprofit enterprises are included in this datalayer. Not all lands in this layer are protected in perpetuity, though nearly all have at least some level of protection.Although the initial data collection effort for this data layer has been completed, open space changes continually and this data layer is therefore considered to be under development. Additionally, due to the collaborative nature of this data collection effort, the accuracy and completeness of open space data varies across the state’s municipalities. Attributes, while comprehensive in scope, may be incomplete for many parcels. The OpenSpace layer includes two feature classes:OPENSPACE_POLY - polygons of recreational and conservation lands as described aboveOPENSPACE_ARC - attributed lines that represent boundaries of the polygonsThese feature classes are stored in an ArcSDE feature dataset named OPENSPACE that includes ArcGIS geodatabase topology. OPENSPACE_POLY - The following types of land are included in this datalayer:conservation land- habitat protection with minimal recreation, such as walking trails recreation land- outdoor facilities such as town parks, commons, playing fields, school fields, golf courses, bike paths, scout camps, and fish and game clubs. These may be privately or publicly owned facilities. town forests parkways - green buffers along roads, if they are a recognized conservation resource agricultural land- land protected under an Agricultural Preservation Restriction (APR) and administered by the state Department of Agricultural Resources (DAR, formerly the Dept. of Food and Agriculture (DFA)) aquifer protection land - not zoning overlay districts watershed protection land - not zoning overlay districts cemeteries - if a recognized conservation or recreation resourceforest land -- if designated as a Forest Legacy Area
