Description: The Bathurst Caribou Herd is named for the Bathurst Inlet, the general area of the herd's traditional calving grounds.
The herd was estimated to have 350,000 animals in the mid 1990's, and surveys throughout the 2000's have shown a rapid decline, down to as low as 35,000 in 2012. However, the herd is now reported to have stabilized.
In 2010, all hunting of this particular herd was suspended in an effort to stabilize the population, with the exception of an annual Aboriginal harvest of 300 caribou.
