Description: Inspired by Nevin Melancthon Fenneman originally from work published in 1928. Dependent heavily on the USGS publication on the determination of Landforms of the Conterminous United States by Gail P. Thelin and Richard J. Pike. Dozens of maps were cross referenced for extensions into Canada, Alaska, and Central America with ultimate control of the boundaries determined by direct comparison to NASA’s Earth Observation download of global elevations based on Space Shuttle Radar Topography and ESRI’s multi angle shaded reliefs layered over top at 40% transparency. Many middle school earth science textbooks reference the landforms of United States while others extended their coverage of all of North America. The author worked to minimize differences while using elevations and hillshades to resolve any disparities. Continental borders were based on countries shapefiles from the Esri Data And Maps CD 2007 merged to form the continental border. Removal of some islands was necessary to give the broader picture of gross landforms.
