The map shows the base (2024) total cargo movement (million tonne-kilometres) by both road and rail.

Data

Data for freight includes NZTA heavy vehicle VKT data (as used for other measures) combined with average cargo weight from weigh-in-motion (WiM) sites. The last 7 years of rail freight net tonne-kilometres (NTK) by line segment has been provided by KiwiRail.
