Description: This is a dataset showing 'Main Urban Areas' which is a subset of NZ Statistics 'Urban Areas' dataset. Populations for the main urban areas have been projected to 2043. The different categories of urban areas (main, secondary, minor) have been defined by Statistics NZ and have no administrative or legal basis, but are used to identify concentrated urban or semi-urban settlements. Main Urban Areas are defined as areas with a minuimum population of 30,000. Secondary Urban Areas are defined as having a population between 10,000 and 29,999. Minor Urban Areas are defined by a population between 1,000 and 9,999. Rural Centres are defined by a population of 300 - 999. Checked for Updates: April 2017 - projection updates for this data are expected to be released late 2017
