Description: This GIS dataset represents all active fire stations that provide fire services to residents in North Carolina. This data is collected and maintained as a part of the 9S fire rating program by the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal which is a section of the North Carolina Department of Insurance. A “Fire Station” is defined in 11 NCAC 05A.0901 as a building for the housing of fire department apparatus and personnel. Under the same Administrative code, a “Fire Department” is defined as an organization established or organized under applicable State and local laws, for the purpose of limiting, reducing, or preventing damage or personal injury caused by fire or other emergency. This fire station point feature was established to inventory all the active stations that meet these requirements.
Description: An arc layer for visual representation of statewide road centerlines on publicly-accessible roads segmented by road intersections and street names. The state road system is comprised of Interstate, US, NC, Secondary Routes, and Ramps. This dataset supports the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) data requirements for the Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS). HPMS is a national level highway information system that includes data on the extent, condition, performance, use, and operating characteristics of the Nation's highways. States are required to submit an HPMS report to FHWA annually. This dataset also contains projected routes, generalized locations of routes that will become part of the National Highway System (NHS) when they are built. The non-system roads are consumed and conflated from authoritative sources, including local (i.e. county), state (i.e. parks) and federal (i.e. Forest Service) entities. Data quality is tracked using the revision document fields (GeoDocType and GeoDocId). Legacy data are coded as not verified in the GeoDocType field. The geometry and spatial location of new data is verified with the most current information available (i.e aerial imagery).

Description: Submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) mapping data were compiled to provide a maximum historical extent of past and present SAV habitat within the coastal zone of the Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Partnership (APNEP) and southern NC region. Mapping events from multiple years have been included, with varying extents, data collection protocols, and methodology, to encompass all regions of coastal NC.
Description: Serves as the final official NPS legislated boundary data for the park unit. The polygons are derived from the line data stored in TractsBndy_ln. Data for this feature class is generally developed in SurveyBndy_ln before being copied to the TractsBndy_ln feature class for final data adjustments.

Description: These boundaries are simplified from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Real Estate Interest data layer containing polygons representing tracts of land (parcels) in which the Service has a real estate interest. Interior boundaries between parcels were dissolved to produce a single set of simplified external boundaries for each feature. These are resource grade mapping representations of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service boundaries. For legal descriptions of the land represented here, contact the USFWS Realty Office. This map layer was compiled by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Although these boundaries represent lands administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, not all areas are open to the public. Some fragile habitats need to be protected from human traffic and some management areas are closed. The public is urged to contact specific Refuges or other conservation areas before visiting. This dataset contains features which have been modified from the source regional data. For select features, geometry has been generalized up to a specified threshold to reduce a high number of vertices in large multipart polygons and improve web service performance. Currently five or fewer features are generalized in each dataset, with the generalization tolerance varying from 1m up to 30m per feature, as required. To further improve web service performance: OGC geometry problems were automatically fixed where possible, true curves were densified, and the data were projected into the WGS 1984 Web Mercator Auxiliary Sphere projection.

Only the U.S. Congress can designate Wilderness. The Service establishes Proposed Wilderness administratively. The primary source for this information is the USFWS Wilderness program.

Description: The North Carolina Natural Heritage Program's Natural Areas are terrestrial and aquatic areas that are of special biodiversity significance. A Natural Area's significance may be due to the presence of rare species, high-quality natural communities, important animal assemblages, or other ecological features, collectively known as “Elements” of biodiversity. The North Carolina Natural Heritage Program (NCNHP) identifies and inventories these areas, evaluates and assigns conservation priority ratings to the Natural Areas based on the biodiversity within them, and works with many partners to implement voluntary protection for them. The Natural Area boundaries are drawn by NCNHP staff, based on field surveys, and are ecological in nature. Many of the Natural Areas are on private land and are not open to the public. Written permission should be obtained from all appropriate landowners before visiting any of these sites.

Description: The North Carolina Natural Heritage Program's Managed Areas are primarily a collection of fee simple properties and easements where natural resource conservation is one of the primary management goals. It does include a number of properties and easements that are not primarily managed for conservation, but that are of conservation interest. This conservation interest ranges from properties and easements which support rare species and intact, high-quality natural communities to those that are open spaces in places where open space is scarce. Lands that are Dedicated Nature Preserves or Registered Heritage Areas are found in this data set. These data are the current equivalent of the Conservation Tax Credit Properties and Land Trust Conservation Properties data set and the Federal Lands in North Carolina data set. Inclusion of a Managed Area in this shapefile in no way implies that the area is open to the public. Some Managed Areas are on private land and are not open to the public; written permission should be obtained from all appropriate landowners before visiting any of these sites.
