Service Description: "Geographical Clusters," as I will call them, consist of groups of institutions within the same geographical area (i.e. New York). I assigned each institution a geographical identity based largely on their location in metropolitan or micropolitan areas (according to the U.S. Census). Then, I calculated the number of individual entries in each dataset (Tenure-Track, Museum-Curator, and Foreign Academic) for each geographical cluster. (For those locations that lay outside of the Census-designated metropolitan/micropolitan urban areas, I used my best guess.) The points on the following maps are the average x-/y-coordinate of the institutions in each geographical cluster. They can then be used to simplify the proportional symbols in the institutional map since there are less than half that can be displayed.
