Service Description: Food Desert Areas are defined by the Number of Households Not served with that area. This was derived removing the areas within walking distance of .3 miles.areas from the Low Income block groups that meet the USDA Criteria noted below.

Description: Population Not Served Food Desert areas for Potential improvement of Food availability for disadvantaged communities. Layers This data was compiled as part of Josphat Mutunga's Master Thesis for the University of Redlands program in 2017. This layer represents the Block groups that met USDA criteria for "Food Deserts" minus the area where Food Stores are within .3 miles.  Food Desert Criteria: Median Income Level equal or less than 80% of Riverside's overall Median Household Income ( 2016 = $54,444); Thus, Households at or below $43,000 represent the population live outside 0.3 miles from food stores.  Food Store Criteria including Retail food sources as well as Food Pantries and Farmers Markets. ( Community Gardens were not included as they are only accessible to members of the garden or have restricted access due to being located on School properties). The derived Fields used to display the Food Desert uses number of Households not served.
