Description: 1. Low income block groups - the median income is below $30 000 and over 20% of households live below poverty level. The level of income was used as it represents 55% of the median income of the City of Riverside i.e. $54, 444 in 2016 (Applied Geographic Solutions and Esri).
2. Food Deserts - Block groups identified as food deserts have households that do not own a car, more than 20% of the population live below poverty level, household income level is below $30 000 and 33% of the population have no access to a food store within 10 minutes.
3. Weighted Overlay - Scenario 3
For this analysis, food stores were ranked according to their capacity to offer a variety of healthy food. The rankings were as follows: Supermarkets/Grocery/Corner Stores- 5, Farmers' markets - 4, Food Pantry - 3, Community gardens - 2 and convenience stores - 1.
4. Weighted analysis scenario 2 - similar to scenario 3 above with an exception of two stores i.e. Farmers' markets - 5 and Supermarkets/Grocery/Corner Stores- 4.
The service area from a store for both analyses is 1 mile/ 10 minutes walking distance. The speed for a person used was 4.68km/hr or 2.9miles/hr.
