Timber_Harvest_Area_Project_AW (FeatureServer)

View In:   Map Viewer

Service Description: Manti-La Sal National Forest needs to determine where commercial harvesting of timber should be allowed. Note: this is only a hypothetical application for a BYU course, not an actual proposal by the National Forest. The primary consideration is that we need to know where there is timber that is commercially valuable. In this area, this is primarily Spruce, Fir, Ponderosa Pine, and Aspen. Second, commercial timber harvesting must not be restricted by law. For example, we cannot harvest on private property or in a wilderness. There are also several features that we want to avoid, such as roads and recreation facilities used by the public. We also want to avoid natural features where timber harvest would lead to ecological damage, such as steep slopes and water features. Combining all of these criteria, and selecting only the larger tracts of forest that are commercially viable, we have determined these areas are suitable for timber harvest. This does not mean that all of these forests will be cut down soon (or ever), just that they will be considered for future leases.
