The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) will begin requiring states to report an intersection inventory as one of the MIRE Fundamental Data Elements. Federal statute requires State DOTs to collect the MIRE FDEs by September 2026. FHWA defines an intersection inventory as a detailed catalog of intersection attributes that may include traffic control devices, geometric configurations, traffic volumes, crash data, and other pertinent characteristics. The goal is to have a thorough understanding of the intersections to support safety improvements and efficient traffic management. An intersection inventory consists of individual points for at-grade intersections and aggregations of points at complex interchanges, approach legs for each route that participates in the intersection, along with key information such as route and DFO, functional classification, and AADT.
Use this app to explore relationships between intersections, interchanges, and approach legs.
