The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is the Federal standard for geographic nomenclature. The U.S. Geological Survey developed the GNIS for the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, a Federal inter-agency body chartered by public law to maintain uniform feature name usage throughout the Government and to promulgate standard names to the public. The GNIS is the official repository of domestic geographic names data; the official vehicle for geographic names use by all departments of the Federal Government; and the source for applying geographic names to Federal electronic and printed products of all types. See http://geonames.usgs.gov for additional information. This is an update to the gnis_dec17 layer.

This dataset contained property that is protected under the Rural and Family Lands Protection Program (RFLPP) in the State of Florida. The Rural and Family Lands Protection Program is an agricultural land preservation program designed to protect important agricultural lands through the acquisition of permanent agricultural land conservation easements. Originally created in 2001 with the passage of the Rural and Family Lands Protection Act, the program has successfully acquired the development rights of seven active agricultural operations, accepted the donation of an active silvicultural operation and the Florida Forest Service is currently in the process of acquiring easements over additional agricultural operations. The program is designed to meet three needs: (1) Protect valuable agricultural lands. (2) Create easement documents that work together with agricultural production to ensure sustainable agricultural practices and reasonable protection of the environment without interfering with agricultural operations in such a way that could put the continued economic viability of these operations at risk. (3) Protect natural resources, not as the primary purpose, but in conjunction with the economically viable agricultural operations. This is an update to the FGDL layer RURAL_FAM_LANDS_FEB19.
