Description:

Description: This item displays Quaternary Formations in the Taranaki Region. Aquifer bearing formations can be generally characterized into those of Quaternary (-> younger) and Tertiary (-> older) age. (The Quaternary Period is the most recent geological period, spanning from approximately 2.6 million years ago to the present day.)

The major shallow aquifers within the Taranaki Region are contained within the Taranaki volcanic and marine terrace deposits (north and south). Quaternary aged volcanic deposits cover a wide area of the Taranaki region, extending from the coastal boundary in the west, to the Tertiary deposits of the Taranaki basin in the east, and bounded to the north and south by the Quaternary marine terrace deposits.
