Name: Population within 10-Minute Walk of a Recreational Space
Display Field: Geo_Name
Type: Feature Layer
Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolygon
Description: This indicator provides information about the percentage of the total population that is within a 10-minute walk of a publicly available recreational space. In well-designed communities, homes, stores, schools, and recreational spaces are connected by safe walking routes, providing an opportunity for all community members to enjoy the outdoors and experience physical and mental health benefits. The closer a person lives to a park, the more likely they are to walk or bike to that park and to use it for exercise. Living within a half mile of a park is associated with higher levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity among community members. For more information about the Community Health Profiles Data Initiative, please see the initiative homepage.
Copyright Text: Indicator generated by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. Data for calculating this indicator came from the following sources: Recreational spaces were compiled from the [1] California Protected Areas Database (CPAD: https://www.calands.org/cpad/), filtering at the holdings (parcel) level on access type (Access is not "No Public Access"). The CPAD data's access type was validated using [2] LA County's "Countywide Parks and Open Space" dataset (https://egis-lacounty.hub.arcgis.com/datasets/lacounty::countywide-parks-and-open-space-public-hosted/about) and the [3] Trust for Public Land's ParkServe dataset. The Countywide Parks and Open Space dataset was also used to supplement CPAD data with recreational spaces that are not typically considered conservation lands, such as community centers with basketball courts, playgrounds, pools, or other publicly accessible recreational facilities. These facilities were included if they are open to the public for free or at a low cost (<$10). For recreational spaces present in both the complete recreational spaces dataset and TPL ParkServe data, 10-minute walk time service areas were sourced from ParkServe. For recreational spaces not present in the ParkServe data (n=76), access points were generated manually or by calculating polygon centroids. These access points were used to generate 10-minute walk time service areas with Esri's Create Drive Time Areas tool in ArcGIS Online. [4] 2022 Provisional PEPS data was allocated to the census block (2020) level, and census blocks whose centroids fell within a 10-minute walk time service area were spatially joined to CHP geographies.
