Description: Focal areas identified in the Nevada Wildlife Action Plan (2012) as discrete landscape units that provide a framework for evaluating the WAP in a statewide context. Focal areas are by no means intended to imply conservation priority or limit conservation action in any way.
Focal areas were identified using the natural basin and range geography of Nevada based upon biodiversity potential and species richness measures. Focal areas were initially deteremined to be those basin and range units that captured as least one documented occurrence of at least 90% of the Species of Conservation Priority (SoCP) listed in the WAP. Basin and range units were then added manually such that at least one documented occurrence of the remaining 10% of the remaining SoCP were represented. Specific units were also added manually to include the Lahontan Audubon Important Bird Areas, Nevada Natural Heritage Program Scorecard sites, significant spring landscapes, and priority habitat for greater sage-grouse, mule deer, and bighorn sheep not previously represented by the methods described above.
