Description: This dataset is based on the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) data downloaded June of 2016 (https://www.protectedplanet.net/) and updated with local data to include lands managed with conservation in mind, including Aquatic Management Areas, Nature Conservancy lands, Scientific and Natural Areas, State Parks, Wildlife Management Areas, Waterfowl Production Area, Wetland Prairie Systems, Wetland Preserves, Upland Prairie Systems, large county and city parks, Carleton College Cowling Arboretum, St. Olaf College Natural Lands, conservation easements owned by individuals, etc.
The following datasets are used to update the WDPA data (areas outsides Rice County are not updated):
- State managed lands were added and updated to the WDPA dataset using the Native Priaries (https://gisdata.mn.gov/dataset/biota-dnr-native-prairies) and DNR Mangement Units (https://gisdata.mn.gov/dataset/bdry-dnr-managed-areas) datasets acquired from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MNDNR) in February 2017.
- Large county and city parks that serve conservation purposes were added to the WDPA data using parks data acquired from Rice County, MN in February 2017.
- Carleton College Cowling Arboretum and St. Olaf Natural Lands were added to the WDPA dataset using data from the two colleges in February of 2017.
Land designation, ownership, management authority, and data source are noted in the attribute table when availible.
