The Driftless Area of southwestern Wisconsin and northwestern Illinois got its name from the lack of glacial sediment ("drift") covering the landscape. The surficial geology and topography of the Driftless Area are thus distinct from the surrounding region where multiple phases of glaciation left their mark. This pamphlet, a collaborative effort between four neighboring state geological surveys, describes and outlines the boundary of the unglaciated Driftless Area based on modern geologic evidence.
This publication and dataset were released to clarify the technical definition of the Driftless Area.

This publication describes the extent of unglaciated ("Driftless") and similar terrains in Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota. Digital data consists of lines defining the definite and the inferred boundaries of the Driftless Area in Wisconsin and Illinois, the boundary of "Driftless-style" terrain in Minnesota and Iowa, and the Central Sand Plain in Wisconsin. Each boundary line has associated description and lists works cited in the Descrip and Notes attributes.
