Overview
This feature layer displays possible wildfire perimeters derived from GOES satellite hotspot detection sensor data. It is intended to provide real-time but relatively low-resolution active wildfire location data in cases where no other authoritative data source is yet available. It is recommended to use this data for reference purposes only and not for operational or programmatic decision-making.
Methodology
Active wildfire perimeters generated in Google Earth Engine using GOES 16 and GOES 18 FDCF Series ABI Level 2 Fire/Hot Spot Characterization Full Disk thermal imagery datasets with a resolution of 2000 meters. GOES 16 and GOES 18 imagery is overlaid to minimize projection distortion. Hotspot pixels with high confidence in the combined imagery are extracted and converted to shapefile boundary polygons.
