This layer is designed to be utilised with the Situational Awareness Viewer to identify New Zealand's Deprivation situation as well as some of the factors that feed into it. It is a meshblock based layer featuring the New Zealand Deprivation Index created by Otago University and various supporting census statistics made available by statistics New Zealand. 

The NZDep2013 index of deprivation has two forms—an ordinal scale and a continuous score. 

• The NZDep2013 index of deprivation ordinal scale ranges from 1 to 10, where 1 represents the areas with the least deprived scores and 10 the areas with the most deprived scores.
• The NZDep2013 index of deprivation interval variable is the first principal component score, which has been scaled to have mean 1000 index points and standard deviation 100 index points. The NZDep2013 10-point scale is derived from this interval variable.

Layer Definitions:

• Population: Total Population by Meshblock
• Population aged over 65: Population aged over 65 by Meshblock
• Population aged under 15: Population aged under 15 by Meshblock
• Median Income: Median income of those over 15 years of age
• One Parent families: Number of One Parent families in this Meshblock (May have families living at seperate households)
• Home not Owned: The number of dwellings not owned or not partly owned by its residents
• Total Household: Total Occupied Dwellings in this Meshblock
• Deprivation Ranking: Percentile where this Meshblocks deprivation score sits in relation to other Meshblocks (Lower is less deprived)
• Deprivation Score: A score based upon the graphic above that displays how deprived a Meshblock is
