Description: As of November 2020, the Asheville Police Department updated the department's use of force policy to include not only when force was used, but also when force was shown. A show of force is defined as a gesture with a lethal and/or less-lethal weapon directed at a person as a means to coerce or gain compliance. A use of force is defined as any physical strike, instrumental contact with a person, or any physical contact that restricts the movement of a person and does not include the application of handcuffs with no resistance. Because of the updated policy, we have created a new dataset for Show of Force data that includes all incidents recorded since November 2020.
This data will be updated Quarterly.
