Service Description: Beaches and coast based tourism hold significant importance for South Africa’s economy, environment, and social well-being (DFFE, 2021b; RSA, 2022b). These beaches serve as hubs for diverse recreational activities such as bathing, swimming, fishing, surfing, kayaking, walking, sunbathing, picnicking, beach-related sports, and observing marine life, birds, and mammals. Economically, coastal and marine tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors in South Africa, making substantial contributions to the national economy and employment. Strategic national plans recognize tourism as a key driver of employment and economic growth, emphasizing the importance of biodiversity, cultural diversity, and scenic beauty as core tourism assets. The sustainability and success of coastal tourism are closely tied to the health of the coastal and marine environment. A clean, healthy environment is fundamental to attracting and maintaining tourism activities.
