Description: The object of this project was to determine if Mountaintop Removal (MTR) mining had increased in the number of acreage in 2010 by comparing our findings to another study that was performed in 2005. Our class was divided into groups with four students per group. The findings depicted in this map are the findings for group 2. To begin our project we were given satellite imagery of the study area and reclassified it using ERDAS Imagine software. Each student had a different area to reclassify and report on. After identifying areas as either MTR or non-MTR we then needed to fine tune our MTR areas. This was done by removing an MTR areas that did not intersect with a file that we were given that identified the ridge line of our study area, as MTR sites will be on ridges. We then erased any MTR areas that fell within a buffered area of road and river banks as the spectral signature of roads and riverbanks can be confused with MTR’s spectral signature. We also removed and MTR sites that were less than 40 acres at these sites were more than likely not MTR sites. Once that was accomplished and we had our final MTR areas we did an accuracy check using random points generated an ArcGIS tool. Now all the final MTR areas were sent to one individual to do a final check and to combine them into one layer file for the entire group. My group’s final accuracy percentage was 93% with a total MTR acreage of 219,589.76.
This project was extremely interesting and brought to light for me the environmental impact that this type of mining is causing in the Appalachian Mountain Range. The project also reinforced for me the power and scope of what can be accomplished using the tools of GIS.
