Description: The MTR layer in this map was derived from multiple forms of analysis. The initial layer started as imagery flown in 2010. An unsupervised classification was performed to identify, isolate, and differentiate mountain top removal mining sites from naturally vegetated areas using 50 pixel colors. This was done by manually selecting pixels from the imagery and designating them as MTR or NonMTR sites. The image was then reclassified to only display areas identified as MTR sites. The resulting image was then converted into a polygon and stored in the geodatabase. The last step take was to remove unnecessary items from within the now polygon layer. Areas not with in a specific range to a mountain ridges and areas. This is because MTR mining is focused on the higher areas of the mountains. And areas within a specific proximity to rivers and roadways were removed. This is because of the similarities in pixel colors to water and roads. Working on this project was very interesting. The tools and processes involved in reaching the most accurate product were great to work with and learn. The only true issue I experienced was with the unsupervised classification of the raster pixels when attempting to identfy the MTR sites in the study area. The issue was the abundance of non MTR pixels the were accidentially selected leading to an inaccurate MTR acreage. I attempted the analysis to two separate occations. Fortunately I was the fifth man in the group and my data was not needed which kept our qroups data accuracy high.
