Description: The analysis of the mountain top removal (MTR) project was done with data and methods provided by SkyTruth.org. The non-profit organization is dedicated to revealing “human caused changes to landscape” of the Appalachian Coal Region of West Virginia. This is done using remotely sensed data. I was part of Group 2 who analyzed this portion of the MTR region. Key aspects of this analysis included converting a reclassified MTR raster to a polygon, performing an accuracy analysis using random points, conducting a comparison analysis of 2010 MTR data against 2005 MTR data, creating and sharing layer packages. The two group leaders compiled data from each member, examined, analyzed, and finally merged the datasets which resulted in the final consolidated MTR polygon. The area analyzed by Group 2 covered 219,589.76 acres and had a 93% accuracy rate.
I worked with 3 other classmates on this project. My role was that of time-keeper. We communicated very well and the two classmates that took on the leadership roles, compiled and analyzed each member’s MTR data, completed the final MTR polygon early, and delivered it to each of us.
