Description: Mountain top removal (MTR) and valley filling are common practices in the coal mining industry. The focus of the analysis is an area of the Appalachian mountain range which extends over five states in the mid-eastern United States.
MTR operations are among the most controversial practices in use by the coal industry because although they are an efficient method of coal extraction, it causes severe impact to the surrounding environment, particularly to the hyrdrology and water quality in the local area and the population which depend on it.
